| After a certain user opens a file, it is locked in Point. The Read-Only box pops ups and states The file (filename) is being used by someone else. Do you want to open the file as read only mode. The problem occurs even after this user has not been in the file for several days. We're running Server 2003. None of the files are listed in the open files list. I can browse to all of the files individually and open each from windows explorer without an issue. None of the files have a read-only attribute marked. For the specific file I'm trying to open in Point today, the last modified date is 6/19. Any ideas would be appreciated, at seemingly random times, the read-only block is lifted.
Thank you |

| Are you using pds or is this just a file share? If its a file share you many need to restart the server.

| I have this problem all the time and it's becoming a nightmare. Tech support tells me that it's not a Point problem, that it must be a windows error and refuses to help (yet, it only happens in Point). I started another thread in the Misc section here and everyone here tried hard to help me, but all the fixes dealt with Windows permissions and none of them worked. I'm at a complete loss for how to handle it.

| | Our IT had to get an update from MS on something called Opportunistic Locking. Means nothing to me, but we believe it has fixed the problem of randomly having files go into read only status. |

| I realize you might have this issue fixed already but you need to read the following information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296264
Essentially you can change the settings on file locking and this should fix the error. However, this could also be an issue with the file server itself. I would be looking at any open connections see how long they have been there and what your rules for open files are. This is a problem best handled by IT the changes made to Opportunistic file locking can cause problems with other applications leading to the possible loss of data.

| This may be a late reply but Micro$oft has its unique way to make sure IT people are employed for life.... When one of my users has this problem we just restart the computer.
It seems like memory issues of how files are open and close before there is another transaction cause a memory lock in unpredictable times.
