We are considering upgrading to PDS With remote offices and remote LO many of the feature offered intrigue us.

We have a New DELL Server with MS SERVER 2007 VMWare and also have 12 licenses for Terminal Server and our team has struggled with errors, speed, and time consumption to get it working right.

With 2 of our off site offices in the neighboring state ( 4 to 6 LO in each office)

Our main office has 2 - 3 Processors and about 25 - 30 Loan Offices,  Not all of them in the office at the same time accessing point.

Our server have plenty of RAM and we are about to add more disc space Our dilemma is the cost or SQL ($9000.00) at what point is SQL Express not going to work for us in the environment.  Our Tech team which are sub Contractor are telling us SQL Express will not work for us.  And want to sell us $9000 upgrade.   at what point do you need more then Express

Thanks

Tom OBrien

The main limit you have with SQL express is that it is limited to using 1 gig of ram and 4 gigs of storage.  With your user size of 50 ish, you should be OK. Your main limit will be how many loans you have in your system.  And even then you could archive some loans into conventional datafolder.

I just check the file size of my Data which is 1.5Gb of space in the flat file format...

You had said that the old loans could be archived into convential folders,  Does that mean that some of the Old Data can bee accessed internally with Point?   That would be great as we have put all of oou loans in folder by year?

The flat file size will be larger then the actual database file size(which has the 4GB limit) since we do not store all of the point fields/files in the Database.

You have two choices, you can copy the loans from PDS into a conventional Datafolder.  Alternativly in PDS you can Switch a Datafolder back to conventional.  As long as a Point client can access that conventional Datafolder you will be able to access all of its files.

I know Calyx does not support Terminal Server and we have struggled to try to get it working with little and Costly success.   This is why we are making the switch to PDS,  Our Network support company has tried to convice us the SQL Express will not work for us, and trying to upsell us to a full SQL to the amount of $9000,  But it seems this would for us.   We will still want to use Terminal Server for some Apps in a couple of cases we may try to get PDS to work in TS.  Any thoughts on PDS in TS?  This might be an occation where a LO is in an office using there computer not his/hers?

Secondly as we get ready to move to PDS we would like to talk to a company similar to our size who has made to change, maybe I should just post a request here for someone to get hints from

Since PDS is a server based product you only need to run one copy for your company.  Depending on your terminal server's load you may or may not want it on the same server.  I would suggest a separate system to better isolate the loan information and increase PDS performance.

You may find it beneficial to still run Point under a TS session and have it connect to your PDS server.  I believe there are some customers utilizing this type of setting you might check the Terminal Sever thread http://messageboard.calyxsupport.com/Forum7-1.aspx

If you post to the message board you may be able to get a lot of valuable information.  You may also try calling Calyx Sales and see what they can offer.

Am I correct to understand the PDS only uses SQL Express to index and Query rather than to compile the whole Data Base??

Once again our entire POINT 6.0 Data folder totals 1.5 GB of which we have seperate data folders for each year and state.  ie 2008Maine, 2008NH, 2007Maine, 2007NH  etc.

We are meeting with the "Tech Team" Today and want to have a clear understanding of how it works.

Currently PDS continues use the Point File as the system of record.  The SQL database indexes some fields for faster search and reporting capabilities.  The database also stores users and their access rights to the folders and templates.
