| | Hello all, I am pretty new to point and have just brought in a new client who is using point. Their company would like to get the PDS software and i was wondering what some of your setup configurations are. Currently they have no servers. My intentions are to get them on Active Directory, and get them a file server. On top of that my question is they have less than 40 employees and from my understanding PDS uses SQL. Would it be wise to have a seperate SQL server from the PDS. The setup i am thinking of is Server 1- Domain Controller Server 2- File server Server 3- PDS OR Server 1 Domain Controller Server 2 File/PDS Since i have no clue how much of a load SQL qill put on the server, i dont know if this is the best setup to use. Also what are some of the general specs you are running for your PDS. I am trying to keep some of the costs low but give them the best setup for their situtation Any help would be greatly apprecieated Fahmi |

| | Check out this article I wrote, which can give you an architectural overview of PDS and some performance numbers: Architectural Overview http://pdskb.calyxsoftware.com/article.aspx?id=11703 Browse around the PDS Knowledge Base, you may find other articles of interest. You don't want to install PDS on the domain controller, but with 40 users and a modern server (good CPU and 2-4GB of RAM), you should have no problems with your "Server 2 File/PDS" setup.

| With 40 user you can probably stick with SQL Express as well.

| | ok change in plans. My client has just informed me that though they may only have 40 employees on-site, they will be having several other sites connect which can lead up to about 300 employees. So with this in mind i may have to go with setup 1. BTW 300 will never be connecting all at onc and that is a number that they "hope" to be at within the next 2-3 years. By end of year they are hoping for 100. doubt they will go above 150 employees though but i am doing a setup based on 300 like they are asking. sever 1- Domain server 2- PDS server 3- File I want to run by the server setup i have priced out to see if this is an over kill or if it will be sufficent enough to be able to last several years with little upgrade. Dell Power Edge sc1430 2x Dual Core Xenon Processors 1.6GHz 4GB Ram Server 2003 Raid 5 configuration with 3 500GB Hard Drives SQL Server 2005 Standard (Can i use workgroup?) Opinions? on both server specs and the 3 setup i plan on running for them |

| | As BetaFisch mentioned, even with 300 employees you should be able to use the free SQL Server Express 2005 without problems. The hardware, CPU and RAM you mentioned will more than enough handle the load.
