We are testing our ability to recover from disasters and we need to be able to re-use a hostname xxxx.calyxpds.com How do we go about removing the old record so a new machine can take it over?

When we get to the resolver configuration we get the error: requested host name already in use. Please choose another host name.

The machine we originally tested PDS on has been rebuilt, with no backup (to be fare to us it was a test box)

Yes, you need to call support - we need to make sure you really owned that hostname xxxx.calyxpds.com; otherwise someone could delete someone else's host.

If you had released that hostname before getting rid of the machine you'd be able to use it (I think you know that - I'm just mentioning it here for others that might read it).
