I have a PDS 5.1 environment with approximately 150 Point 5.2 users and 44 data folders.  We make extension use of PDS's built-in security, but managing the rights is painful.  My issue is that when I want to limit a user's access to only files belonging to that user, I have to touch the Point client to make sure the user's name is added to the Rep/Processors dropdown for each folder that I have applied this security to.  Further, the user's name must match exactly that which is listed in PDS.  While it is true that I could use PDS to copy the folder settings from another folder, we do not use the same folder settings across multiple folders and this still requires me to fire up the client to touch at least one folder.

In my environment, we have a team that manages user access to resources across the enterprise.  They use PDS to add the user, but do not have access to the Point client to add the users to the dropdowns, which leaves this task to the engineering team.  Unfortunately, this gap in process coupled with human error ends up creating support calls for my team because often the name added to the dropdown does not match PDS or the name has not been added at all.

In the past I have investigated scripting this process for the sake of QC and ease of administration.  Unfortunately, I hit deadends and was eventually forced to drop it.

Does 5.3 ease any of this pain?  Has anyone reading this come up with a solution in 5.1?

Help!

I've submitted this issue for consideration as a future feature in PDS / Point. I agree that when these drop downs have to match character by character in case, white space, etc., it doesn't make sense to enter them when adding a user and then retype them in Point for the drop downs. Your comments help to raise the priority of this issue when the features for future releases are evaluated.

Thank you for the feedback!

YOu can bypass having to manually enter them b doing a simple cut and paste to the Folder.ini if you are comfortable doing it. It won't show up for users until they logout and back in.. and I know doing this for 44 Folders is... time consuming at best but it keeps you from doing it inside of calyx and should speed the process some if you are adding multiple people at the same time.. PLUS>.. it makes it so that your number of errors will be reduced on misspelling someone's name..
