| | I hear SQL on SBS has limitations, i have sbs premium here at the office. i have 30 users here and 30 remotly in another office, we have a VPN between the two offices strictly for doing data folder backups at the moment. I want to run PDS to share one central point server, but i am hearing that sbs has lots of limitations as far as sql on it. I have searched ms's website and other sites but can't get a real answer on the subject. My goal will to have 30 users using PDS server on my SBS machine - these 30 will be logged into the domain. and another 30-50 users remotly accessing PDS server (not logged into the domain, so annon sql users.)
Is this possible with sbs? Or is it time to upgrade to 2003 standard and get a CPU license for SQL? |

| | Calyx has not tested PDS on Windows 2003 SBS (Small Business Server), or any other version of SBS. PDS is intended to run on a server dedicated to PDS to simplify support, simplify administration and provide the best performance. SBS includes a number of web server applications. Web server applications if not configured properly can conflict with each other. PDS uses the IIS web server, so it's much simpler to deploy it on a machine without other web services. Advanced customers may know how to configure multiple web server applications on the same computer. Configuring other web server applications to share the same computer is beyond the scope of PDS support. You'll notice that Windows 2003 SBS (Small Business Server) is actually another operating system platform from Microsoft. You don't install SBS on Windows Server 2003. Instead SBS is it's own, highly integrated version of Windows 2003 with a number of other Microsoft server applications (SharePoint, Exchange Server, Shared Fax Service, SQL Server, ISA Server...). The administration of Windows 2003 SBS is different than Windows 2003. Windows 2003 SBS has it's own dedicated Service Packs because it is so different from Windows 2003. According to Microsoft's SBS FAQ, there can only be one small business in a domain. It also cannot be used in a branch office scenario because it does not support Active Directory trusts. SBS is intended to be the primary server for a small business with basic needs. SBS is limited to a maximum of 75 users or devices by adding optional licenses. It has a number of limitations that are consistent with that application that are not appropriate to diverse environments PDS can support. Running the primary email server (Exchange Server) and PDS on the same server is inappropriate to many organizations since common email issues like spam attacks can impact the mail server and dramatically slow down or effectively stop any other server applications on the same server. Calyx does not support PDS on Windows SBS (Small Business Server). |

| | I am in the unfortunate position of staring SBS 2003 down... I'm the new IT Support guy at a texas based mortgage company who previously outsourced their IT needs to an idiot. This led to a purchase of Small Business Server 2003 for the PDS 5.3 / Point 5.4 upgrade which has fallen into my lap... I understand that SBS is "not supported" by Calyx, but has anyone managed to work around the issues? |

| | I've done one install on SBS2003 and it was very messy but it did work. It involved removing AD and reinstalling IIS serveral times. Uninstalling AD violates the SBS2003 EULA and the machine will start shutting down after 15 or 30 days. Wouldn't recommend it. |

| | Have you actually tried to install PDS on SBS 2003 yet. I don't know what the limitations are with SQL, but I wouldn't worry about that part as it is unlikely that you'll be limited by SQL. IIS is another story. Whatever changes PDS installation makes may impact other items in IIS. Another option that you do have is to add another server to your SBS 2003 environment. While you only can have one SBS 2003 server, you can have as many Windows 2000 or 2003 member servers as you want. They can even be promoted to domain controllers. Obviously, this means more of an investment in hardware and an additional server OS. |
