| Trying to help a good friend of mine with a small business.
Currently using an old Win98 box as the server on the LAN. They use GoToMyPC to remotely access a desktop on the LAN at the office when they work from home. We just bought a new Vostro 200 with XP Pro. I was told by LogMeIn that they thought Himachi would allow two or more users to login and work as though there were connected to the local LAN where the server (XP box) is. Will be connected using DSL with about 7Mpbs down/1.5 up.
Here's my goal:
1) I would like to have just the XP box ("server") and two laptops
2) when users are at office they will connect to the LAN like they do now
3) when they want to work from home they take their laptop. I would like for them to be able to hit the server shared driver remotely like when they are attached to the LAN.
We're tying to get rid of old PCs and reduce possible bottlenecks with old PCs and having to go through them with GoToMyPC or LogMeIn.
Calyx told me to try in this forum.
Small business here so really trying to keep costs down but find an effective way to do this but would like to have good speed. |

| The simple route would be to get a windows 2003 os on your server and install pds. Then they would not need any thing other than an Internet connection to access their data.

| | Down the road the talk for this biz is to move to home office. One user could then be connected to the LAN which would have the XP Pro box and the other user would come in remotely. This other user could simply use RDC correct and they could both use Point? |

| I don't belive windows xp will let you do that, you would need windoes 2003 which will support multiple users on one machine.

| | But if one person is working local and only one remote wouldn't this work. XP Pro allows for 10 local users. |

| | Maybe this sounds over simplified but those 10 users are logged in to get network access. So can't one of them be remote? |

| | If nobody is physically sitting at the XP box, and it is sitting as a server, you should be able to have one user as RDP client. If someone is at the XP box, it will blank them away from access. The best answer is still the W2K3 server and PDS. It is rock solid and then you can have RDP access everywhere and upgrades get back to being reasonably standardized. We have been hosting Point servers for multiple companies since Calyx 5.2 and the server solution is the best. You should be able to get into the server OS fairly cheaply if you consider time savings in centralized updates and remote access. |

| | It's taken care of. They are using Hamachi VPN on the two remote laptops and they hit the "server" fine with Point. |
