| So I was checking out the requirements for PDS Server 5.1. Anyone have a better idea of what they really are? Requiring either a PIII or P4 at or above 3.0GHZ seems way off. Did they mean 1GHZ or higher? What were people running 5.0 on?
Thanks! Rob |

| | I suppose you are talking about the system requirements found at: Q10131 - INFO: (v5.1) System Requirements http://pdskb.calyxsoftware.com/article.aspx?id=10131 If you look at the next article in the PDS Knowledge Base, you will find: Q10132 - INFO: (v5.1) Architectural Overview http://pdskb.calyxsoftware.com/article.aspx?id=10132 The above article contains the results of PDS performance tests based on the following: - The data folder used in the tests had roughly 2,500 loan files and 500 co-borrower files.
- The same data folder was used with and without Point Data Server Acceleration.
- The Point Data Server database was configured with:
- 5000 Users
- 500 User Groups
- 500 PDS Accelerated folders.
- Over 1,000,000 (one million) loan files.
- Over 6,000,000 (six million) tasks.
- The hardware defined in the System Requirements (with 2GB of system RAM)
If you have less users, less data folders, less loan files, etc... you might not need a Pentium 4 with 3.0+ Ghz, but this is the hardware we used and those are the numbers that have been certified by our Quality Assurance team. I think you are right, we many need to update the requirements to specifically define what you can do with PDS running in the above hardware (the above info). I forwarded your remark to the documentation folks, thanks for the feedback.

| | robriley - What sort of hardware did you have in mind? I presume you're trying to re-use existing hardware since new hardware will generally be 2.8Ghz or faster. The PDS 5.1 hardware requirements are the same as PDS 5.0. The RAM is the most important performance factor. |

| Thanks for the info... We haven't purchased PDS yet, but it will be easier to budget for if I don't have to include the price of a new server. We're relatively small -- 25 users, less than 4000 point records a year so based on the replies I can give it a shot on an older server with a fair amount of RAM (1GB plus). If I can sell it to the people who pay the bills, I'll post my results on how it works for us with whichever hardware I use! |

| | Thanks for the reply robriley, it really helps! The faster the CPU, the better. For the relatively small organization you have a somewhat slower CPU should be fine. 2GHz would be no problem. If you start going below 1GHz, the motherboard may not be able to hold enough ram and just rebooting the server takes that much longer.... So everything is slower... On the RAM side, 1.5GB if you can easily do it is no problem for a relatively small organization. Going below 1GB is pretty tricky because IIS and SQL Server both need a fair amount of RAM especially when returning a large amount of data to Point, like a very large report. You are likely to have performance issues or not get results with 512MB. The RAM as I mentioned before is critical, so try and go over 1GB. Please post what your final CPU speed and RAM is when you have it. Please post your results also! thanks! |
